Museumserlebnis at it's best ...

Eine schöne Erfahrung also!

Absolut empfehlenswert

Sehr interessantes, toll gestaltetes Museum.

Unbelievable Experience and a lasting impression

I loved my visit to the Van Gogh Museum. I spent almost 4 hours here. The museum is very well laid out and takes you on a step-by-step journey through the life of Vincent Van Gogh. The exhibits here are thought-provoking, with many lessons about life. Even if you are not a fan of Van Gogh’s art, you will still learn something about life with a visit to the museum. A lot of food for thought. I left the museum with a lasting impression.

Worth a visit, but get the audio guide!

This was a stopover for us before catching the night train. We found ourselves enjoying it much more than we had expected to. It was informative (the audio guide was very good) and the paintings were well displayed. We would definitely recommend a visit. We did have lunch in the restaurant, and that we did not feel was very good value for money.

No substitute for seeing this collection in person.

The main gallery of the museum is a wonderful experience - it is excellently curated, and spaciously presented. The cost of the admission fee is extremely reasonable given the the breadth of the collection on display. Staff were very pleasant. I would expect most people would want to dedicate at least several hours (at a minimum) to have a good experience of the collection. Given our experience (mid-afternoon), it was very busy, and certain room and galleries felt very crowded at times, with bottlenecks at the 'usual suspect' iconic paintings, so if going again, I would probably recommend/aim an earlier visiting time (morning might be best). Ultimately, There is really no substitute to seeing this collection in person and spending as much time as possible absorbing them.

Relaxing and educational

Visited as an excursion on a cruise. I did a self guided audio tour. Enjoyed it and learned a lot. There are public restrooms, a place to eat and a gift shop. There is also an escalator to shopping mall type area.

A day well spent at the Van Gogh Museum!

My first visit to the Van Gogh Museum was an unforgettable experience. I arrived on a Saturday right when the museum opened at 9:00 AM and ended up staying until closing time at 6:00 PM. Even after spending the entire day there, I still felt like there was more to discover. As home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works in the world, the museum offers a remarkable journey through both his art and his life. I highly recommend getting the audio guide. I chose the English version, and I appreciated that it offered both shorter and more in-depth tours. The extended version takes about 90 minutes and provides fascinating stories behind the paintings and the artist himself. The permanent collection spans multiple floors and contains many of Van Gogh’s most famous works, including Sunflowers, Wheatfield with Crows, and his unfinished final painting, Tree Roots. One thing I particularly enjoyed was learning about the myths surrounding some of his paintings. For example, I had always heard that Wheatfield with Crows was his last painting, but the museum explains that he actually painted several more optimistic works afterward. The exhibition does much more than display paintings. It tells the story of Vincent van Gogh as a person - his struggles, his love of nature, and especially his close relationship with his brother Theo van Gogh, whose support was essential throughout Vincent’s life. Seeing the letters and learning about their bond added a deeply human dimension to the experience. The museum also showcases works by artists who inspired Van Gogh, such as Claude Monet, as well as artists who were later influenced by him. It provides valuable context for understanding his place in art history. One of my favorite moments was at the very beginning of the exhibition, where visitors encounter Van Gogh through his self-portraits. I had always wondered why he painted himself so often. The museum explains that he simply could not afford to hire models, so he used his own reflection as a subject. Small details like this made the artist feel much more relatable. The temporary exhibition was also excellent and included works such as Almond Blossoms. There was plenty to see beyond the permanent collection. Despite being very crowded, especially on a Saturday, the museum was well organized. Visitor flow was managed efficiently, and while there were lines at times, everything moved smoothly. The museum also provides lockers for luggage storage, clean restrooms near the café area, and a café serving good food. I also enjoyed the museum shop and creative spaces where visitors can engage with the artwork in different ways, including activities inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings. Perhaps the most inspiring part of the visit was learning about Van Gogh’s incredible dedication to his craft. In roughly the last 70 days of his life, he created around 75 paintings - an astonishing level of productivity! Walking through the galleries and seeing the beauty he found in ordinary landscapes, nature, and everyday life was genuinely moving. Even though some of his most famous works, such as The Starry Night (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and certain self-portraits held by other museums around the world, are not here, the collection is extraordinary and offers an unparalleled insight into Van Gogh’s artistic journey. Whether you are an art lover or simply curious about one of history’s most influential painters, the Van Gogh Museum is absolutely worth a visit. Plan to spend several hours here - you will need them.

Fascinating and interesting museum

This is one of the best and most interesting museums I have ever visited. It not only houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings in the world, but also a fascinating and understandable history of his remarkable life. I got goose bumps just being that close to so many amazing paintings. It's absolutely necessary to book a spot in advance. And by all means pay for the audio guide -- it's well worth the small extra cost.

Van Gogh Wonderful -Audio Guide Terrible

The story of Van Gogh and his paintings was in chronological order. It was exciting to see some of the paintings up close especially the Sunflowers. His history of mental illness is also covered, but the emphasis is on his artwork and how it changed over time. My complaint is about the audio guides. Horrible. I could barely keep mine on. It was difficult to use and hard to use for each painting in the rooms.

Excellent, clean and modern museum

I’m not usually someone who goes to art galleries, but this was recommended to me. It did not disappoint. It is spotlessly clean in the museum. The staff are very friendly. Free lockers for your belongings (no backpacks allowed, which is standard in many museums). The exhibitions were very interesting. We declined the audio guide as we just wanted to just soak in the art and read the information. The permanent collection was my favourite, but it was also interesting to see other works from different artists in the current exhibition too. One thing that was a bit annoying (and sadly pretty common) was a significant number of people just wandering round filming non-stop. It impacted on our enjoyment a bit. It was also kind of sad to see people viewing the gallery through a camera lens (which you could easily do at home) rather than taking the opportunity to view those paintings directly with just their eyes and be in the moment with the artwork (none of this is the fault of the museum, however).

Exploring the Life and Art of Vincent van Gogh

We really enjoyed our visit to the Van Gogh Museum. The museum offers a fascinating journey through the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, with a large collection of paintings, drawings, and personal stories that help visitors understand his artistic development and unique style. The exhibition is well organized, making it easy to follow Van Gogh’s career from his early works to his later masterpieces. I especially appreciated the opportunity to see so many of his paintings in one place and learn more about the influences behind his art. The museum is modern, well maintained, and provides a comfortable environment for visitors. That said, I was hoping to see a few more of his most iconic and impressive paintings. While the collection is extensive and interesting, We felt that the presence of additional world-famous masterpieces would have made the experience even more memorable. Nevertheless, the artworks on display are beautiful and offer valuable insight into one of history’s greatest artists. Overall, the Van Gogh Museum is a very nice place to visit in Amsterdam. It combines art, history, and culture in an engaging way and is well worth a visit for anyone interested in painting or looking to learn more about Van Gogh’s remarkable life and legacy. Try it.

The life and art of Van Gogh

Fantastic museum with a huge collection of Dutch masterpieces. The museum is on 4 levels starting with the middle ages on the ground floor and working up to more modern art on the 3rd floor. You definitely see a change in styles through the centuries with the best works largely on the 1st and 2nd floors. They offer guided tours and self guided audio to help you absorb it all. It takes at least 2-3 hours to get through it all. Recommend buying tickets a day or two ahead as tickets are timed entry and they sell out quickly

What a change in 40 years

We visited the museum back in the late 80"s when it was a small structure with very limited display space. It has change completely from that to a very sophiscated and wildly popular venue. The old structure is still in place; however, it has been transformed into a much larger display area that is far more appropriate for the art on display. There are much bigger crowds today because of the size of the total museum. The new (very modern--as the stock photo shows) structure attached to the old building via a wonderful lobby area is a delight to make the entrance to the larger area of very special works of Van Gogh. The whole space of the new area is packed with visitors. But the good news is that it is easier to see the works up close and personal. This is one of the top stops in Amsterdam, and is well worth your time (minimum of 2 hours) if you are familiar with Van Gogh. Assuming that you are, you can skip the very small type plaques and "standard" stories about him and his relationship with his brother--as well as his frustrations with others. If not, get his back story(s) "on line" and save your time to appreciate the works.

Excellent Museum in Amsterdam

Excellent in design, painting pieces and organization. Book online in advance as it gets busy. We went early in the morning as 9 am and it was already crowded. Pay extra for the audio guide it is worthy. Kids are not charge. Bag storage is included. It takes a good 2 hours. We recommend it.

Interesting Insight to Van Gogh

Pre booked 6 weeks in advance as friends advised us that it gets very busy. The museum offers an interesting insight to Van Gogh & his life. The audio was very good and easy to follow. The museum whilst busy was quite easily navigated with only some backing up mainly at famous painting. Well worth a visit and worth the entrance fee.

A Journey Worth Taking

Visiting the Van Gogh Museum was such a beautiful and moving experience. You truly feel a deep connection to him through his art; his pain, passion, and intensity come through in every brushstroke. Seeing iconic works like Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, and The Potato Eaters in person was powerful in a way photos of his art simply can't capture. The museum is thoughtfully curated, allowing you to follow his life chronologically and really understand the emotional journey behind the paintings. If you're looking for a meaningful, immersive experience, you’ll find that here! *I visited in January on a Tuesday around 1:30 PM, and it was not overly crowded. I was able to move through the galleries and spend time admiring all of his work without feeling rushed. If you are going during peak season, I would recommend getting there early.

An Amsterdam Must Visit

The Van Gogh Museum is a must visit when in Amsterdam. The museum features paintings and very interesting historical information. The museum houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh paintings. A self guided walking headphone tour is highly recommended. The tour gives details of Van Gogh's paintings and life and delves deeply into background, family and hardships that made Van Gogh the painter that he became. A recommendation is to buy your ticket in advance an on line to insure entrance.

Essential to see, crowded, have ticket pre-bought

Tip: 1) Must buy timed entry tickets on line. Don’t walk up as it’s always sold out. Tickets usually sell out days in advance so plan early. If you’re travelling, and use an eSIM, note that buying requires SMS verification which could be a problem. 2) Get an audio guide. It’s reasonably priced and somewhat informative. Better than nothing but prefer the Rijks version that is free through their app 3) Prepare for crowds especially around celebrated paintings with not a lot of places to sit. There are three floors that mostly work via two staircases. (although there are elevators but not enough for all) The museum contains works that influenced Van Gogh and artists that were influenced by him. It also contains some close peers. What is interesting? There is a section that informs about pivotal family support by his brother (including letters) who financed him and his sister in law who promoted his unknown works after his death and made his work famous today.

Wow! A must see.

A definite place to put on your bucket list. This man was truly gifted and it portrays his troubled life with care and respect. We never realised what a prolific painter he was, producing wonderful paintings in such a short period. The museum contains many significant artist’s paintings which were his colleagues of day. A very enjoyable experience.

A must see but more can be done

This smallish museum is a must see in Amsterdam. However it does seem odd that you still have to queue outside, even when you HAVE to pre book tickets and its nearly always sold out. Plus there is no protection to the elements, which given we are in northern europe seems an oversight.

Fantastic experience

At first, I was shocked to see the museum at such a modern building. Once inside, the experience did not disappoint at all! I took the audio tour device, and I'd definitely recommend you do that when you visit this museum. If you're with other people, it may be less practical if you want to exchange thoughts and perceptions, but as it was on my own, it was fantastic for me. The system is very well designed for you to follow the rooms in the right order. Be sure to select "full" to get audio commentary of all key pieces. If you’re short of time, select "highlights" - this is what I did at first, but then went back to the full version. The pieces are great, but the audio tour really brought it all to life for me. The tour also allowed me to walk around while listening to the commentary. The narration was fantastic, filled with sentiment. In total, the visit took me about an hour and a half including the temporary exhibition called "Yellow". I would definitely recommend visiting this museum if, like me, you admire the work of Van Gogh or are just a lover of art.
